This giant breed has a massive head with a short, wide muzzle and a broad, deep chest and powerful body. Male dogs stand about 30 to 34 inches tall at shoulder height and weigh from 165 to 205 pounds. Female dogs stand about 28 to 32 inches tall and weigh from 130 to 175 pounds. The Mastiff's coat is short, hard and lies close to the body with a dense undercoat. The short coat is fawn, apricot, silver or brindle with a black facial mask and darker ears. This giant breed is a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Working Dog Group. History: The Old English Mastiff may have been introduced into Britain by Phoenician traders but it certainly was used as a war dog by Roman legions. Mastiffs were used as dogs of war until the late Middle Ages and then used to hunt bears and wolves and for the 'sport' of bear-baiting. After bear-baiting was banned in the 19th century, the breed's popularity declined in England but remained popular in the U.S. as guard and companion dogs. This giant breed was ranked 33rd out of 154 dog breeds in 2004 AKC registrations. Temperament: This gentle giant of a dog is a great family dog that is calm, dignified, good-natured, gentle, loyal, and very fond of children. Because of its giant size, toddlers are in danger of knock-down, and should always be supervised carefully. Mastiffs need a house with a large fenced yard. Some fully grown mastiffs can adapt to apartment living if given regular exercise. This breed needs lots of companionship and should have early and on-going socialisation and obedience training. This intelligent and good-natured dog responds well to early obedience training and you must be able to control this giant breed with voice commends. Mastiffs tend to drool and slobber a lot and will wheeze and snore loudly. This breed is naturally protective of its home and family and must be socialised early and often with other dogs to prevent it from becoming combative. Mastiffs make good watch dogs and guard dogs. They should have an experienced owner who knows how to manage them. Exercise: Young dogs should not be exercised too strenuously while they are still growing. Fully-grown Mastiffs need regular exercise including walks and runs as they have a tendency to be lazy and gain weight. These dogs are not jogging companions but do enjoy walks -- always on leash. Mastiffs always need a soft place to lie down because they are so heavy. Grooming: Mastiffs require minimal grooming except when shedding and then brushing with a rubber brush will remove loose hairs. Health Considerations: This giant breed can be expected to live for only 6 to 10 years. These dogs are prone to hip dysplasia, heart defects, cancer, kidney disease and eyelid (entropion) disorders. Mastiffs should be fed 2 or 3 smaller meals per day as they are subject to bloat. Dosa was developed in the late 1800's from a variety of imported European and Asian working breeds, but most fanciers agree that it was finally established as a recognizable type by crossing the Japanese Tosa-Inu with the Neapolitan Mastiff and the Dogue de Bordeaux over the next 100 years. In the 2nd half of the 20th century, a small percentage of English Mastiff blood was introduced into some strains as well, but the "Beauty" Dosa was mostly developed through generations of inbreeding and selection based on coat colour and temperament. In appearance almost identical to a red-coloured variety of the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Mee-Kyun Dosa is a massive, large and loose-skinned Molosser, somewhat lethargic and seemingly sluggish. However, this wrinkled gentle giant can make a good property watchdog and is reportedly easy to obedience train. Devoted to its owner and loving of children, the Dosa is said to be a good family companion, but it is still rarely seen outside of Korea. The head is large, round and wide, with many wrinkles on the face and hanging ears and lips. The neck is strong and has prominent dewlaps. Wide-chested and tall, the Dosa makes a convincing guardian. Roger Powell is recovering from Monday's attack at home. "You can see where the back was first hit and of course the left arm," said the 50-year-old mail carrier. By looking at his uniform, it's not difficult to pick out the three spots where the pit bull mastiff bit him at a house on Miller Dale Lane. Areas of the shirt are soaked with his blood. "I'm walking off; I'm already back off the steps and onto the yard, and the next thing I know the dog had bust through the door," said Powell. While Powell rolled on the ground, he said the dog's owners looked on. "He was already biting me," he said. "I screamed to the man, 'Get your dog!'" "I told him yesterday I was sorry," Vicky McClure, the dog's owner, said through tears. "I didn't mean for him to get bitten. It was just a freak accident; it just happened." McClure says her dog Bruiser, also known as Boozy, escaped when he accidentally hit the latch on the door. "He's just protecting his house," she said. "He's a good baby." "That dog is just mean. He's a mean dog," said the McClure's next door neighbor, John Escobedo. He says he was bitten by the same dog three weeks ago, and he has the scars and pants to prove it. "I knocked on the door, and they said, 'Come on in.' I open the door, and the first thing I see is this big huge dog attack me," he said. Escobedo didn't report the attack or go to the hospital. The three-year-old pit bull mastiff will be quarantined at Dallas Animal Services for ten days. Officials also scheduled a dangerous dog hearing. If the dog is found guilty and deemed dangerous, the dog owner may still be able to keep the dog. However, the owners will have to pay $100,000 insurance, post dangerous dog signs outside the house and put a dangerous dog tag on the dog. If the dog is not already microchipped, it will be now. If it's proven the dog is not dangerous, it will be released to the owner. The U.S. Postal Service is also investigating the case. "We love dogs too," said Sandra Gattis, U.S. Postal Service. "But this dog - if it's a big a problem as I understand it is - I believe the dog needs to be put to sleep." Powell, who bears the scars from another dog attack in 2002, agrees. "I think in this case and irresponsibility of the owner, it should be put down," he said. They intend to file a lawsuit against these dog owners because of growing medical care for mail carriers.
